Three people, including a 15-year-old, were shot at a Pennsylvania amusement park on Saturday night, sparking a panic that sent terrified park goers running for their lives.
Shots rang out at Kennywood Park in West Mifflin, just outside of Pittsburgh.
The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police responded to the scene to assist the West Mifflin Police Department after receiving calls of shots being fired at the park.
The shooting was sparked by an argument between two groups of people.
During the altercation a 15-year old boy suffered a gunshot wound in the thigh and was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
A 39-year-old man was shot in the leg but was treated and released from the hospital.
The third person, identified as a juvenile whose age was not immediately known, was grazed in the leg. Police said he fled the amusement park following the shooting.
The West Mifflin Police Department released an advisory asking people to avoid the area due to an increased emergency services presence.
Many thrill-seekers had been visiting the park for the annual Kennywood’s Fall Festival nights, which are held each Saturday before Halloween and keep the park open until 11 p.m., according to the park’s website.
According to the park’s website, The theme park remained closed on Sunday and will reopen its doors next Saturday.
An employee who witnessed the incident said, ” I didn’t realize the bangs that I heard were gunshots until everyone began to panic. I didn’t know where people were running, and next thing you know everyone is hiding and there’s just cops everywhere and everyone is in, like, a chaos. By the time I realized what was going on it already happened.”
“Luckily I didn’t see anything or witness any violence but I witnessed people panicking and running. It was kind of scary,” he added.
A spokesperson for the park said, “All guests had exited the park shortly after midnight. We are aware of a situation that occurred this evening and are working with local law enforcement. The safety of our guests and Team Members are our top priority. Members of the park’s security, Allegheny County, and West Mifflin police departments were already on site and immediately responded.”
