Controversy has stirred amongst some parents and students after the administration of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has rejected a new Advanced Placement course on African American history.
The administration stated in a letter that the course lacked educational value and is contrary to Florida law.
“In the future, should College Board be willing to come back to the table with lawful, historically accurate content, FDOE will always be willing to reopen the discussion,” reads the letter, which was sent to the College Board from the Florida Department of Education Office of Articulation.
However, the letter does not specify what, exactly is inaccurate about the course, which is now in a pilot phase in 60 high schools around the country.
The course covers more than 400 years of African American history and is the College Board’s first new offering since 2014.
The College Board itself describes the course as interdisciplinary and reaching “into a variety of fields; literature, the arts and humanities, political science, geography, and science, to explore the vital contributions and experiences of African Americans.”
Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called the decision to block the course “incomprehensible” when speaking to reporters during a press briefing.
“These types of actions aren’t new, especially from what we’re seeing from Florida, sadly,” said Jean-Pierre.
The decision to block the AP course comes on the heels of DeSantis’ signing of a controversial legislation that opponents have denounced as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.
The “Parental Rights in Education” bill, which took effect in July, blocks certain LGBTQ topics in the third grade or younger or “in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.”
DeSantis is also the proponent of the “Stop WOKE” Act, a measure that prohibits teaching certain concepts related to race.
In his January inauguration speech, DeSantis slammed what he called “philosophical lunacy” in schools, saying, “We must ensure that our institutions of higher learning are focused on academic excellence and the pursuit of truth, not the imposition of trendy ideologies.”
“I just do my job and we work hard … I hear all this stuff and honestly it’s nonsense,” DeSantis stated.
I’d like to see the College Board offer an AP course on election fraud and the vast liberal conspiracy against our 2nd amendment freedoms! Public education is destroying this country. So very sad. I would really like to see the Catholic Church take over all the schools in this country, before it’s too late!
If it weren’t for Donald Trump’s endorsement back in 2018 Ron DeSantis would be lucky to have an assistant manager job at Orange Julius today. DeSantis steals all of Trump’s best policies and then he doesn’t even acknowledge the huge debt he owes to Trump. If DeSantis were a real Republican then he would be working harder to defund ALL public schools in the great state of Florida! DeSantis = RINO!!! TRUMP ‘024!!!
Although I support Ron DeSantis’s war on public education, I can’t get past his flip flopping COVID policies. He locked down Florida for months before Trump finally convinced him to reopen the Sunshine State. And then he administered potentially dangerous COVID vaccines on millions of senior citizens. Who knows what the long term consequences of DeSantis’s “vaccines” will be?
And what’s the deal with DeSantis denying the large scale election fraud that occurred in 2020???
DeSantis is just too liberal for me. That’s why I’ll be voting for Trump in 2024!!!
My dad says that Ron DeSantis is too short to be President. He also says that pickle juice cures the gout. The government has known about this for years, but Obama suppressed it from the public.
