A man in Pennsylvania who was suspected and wanted for the murder of his mother during an argument, was apprehended by authorities after he tried to jump from the second floor of the Pittsburgh airport parking garage.
On Feb. 14, just before 8 a.m., officers with the Allegheny County Police Department responded to the parking garage at Pittsburgh International Airport.
After making a call seeking medical help, 30-year-old Joshua Leyo was found in a stairwell with serious injuries.
According to a report by the Altoona Police Department, Leyo had been wanted in Blair County on murder charges in connection with the death of his mother, 61-year-old Maureen Mazenko.
On Feb. 14, around 1:45 p.m., officers responded to an Altoona home, where they found Mazenko dead with a stab wound to the neck.
After a thorough investigation, detectives were able to conclude that Mazenko lived at the home of her son, who was not at the scene and could not be located. Investigators learned that Leyo had been treated at a local hospital the morning prior for a cut to his hand and eventually tracked him to the Pittsburgh International Airport.
Authorities claimed Leyo was using Mazenko’s bank account and had taken an Uber from Altoona and made purchases in the Pittsburgh area.
“Altoona Police Officers reached out to The Department of Homeland Security and Allegheny County Police Department, who advised that Leyo had jumped from the 2nd floor of the parking garage at the airport and was currently hospitalized at Allegheny General Hospital being treated for serious injuries,” the press release states.
While authorities interrogated Leyo, he confessed to stabbing his mother during a heated argument and also said she was dead when he left his house.
Leyo remains in police custody at the hospital and is awaiting extradition to Blair County once he is released. According to his court docket, Leyo faces charges of first-degree murder, third-degree murder, aggravated assault, possession of an instrument of crime with intent, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person.
