Former President Trump overwhelmingly outperformed President Biden in their Thursday presidential debate, according to new polling data.
A survey by Schoen Cooperman Research, conducted among 500 registered voters, revealed that 51% of those who watched or were familiar with the debate believed Trump emerged victorious, while only 23% felt Biden won.
Additionally, 14% saw the debate as a draw, and 12% were unsure of the winner. More than half of the voters expressed that Biden’s performance was worse than expected, compared to 17% who thought Trump underperformed.
Voters perceived Trump’s performance as more presidential than Biden’s, with the poll indicating that Trump succeeded in easing concerns about his fitness for office, while Biden heightened worries.
Nearly three-quarters of the respondents left the debate feeling more concerned about Biden’s age and capability to serve as president.
For Trump, 39% of voters felt more troubled by his perceived chaos and lack of presidential character, but 30% reported feeling less concerned about this issue after the debate.
Despite Trump’s decisive victory at the debate, the overall dynamics of the race remained largely unchanged.
Among those surveyed, 47% planned to support Trump, while 43% intended to vote for Biden. An essential 10% of voters were either undecided or did not plan to vote.
The survey results echoed Trump’s pre-debate polling leads.
The Schoen-Cooperman poll delivered more unfavorable news for Biden.
A significant 50% of voters stated they were “much more likely to vote” as a result of the debate.
Although both candidates received negative views, Biden’s unfavorable ratings were higher, with 53% of voters disliking him compared to 50% for Trump.
“Trump is the clear winner of the debate as he was able to both improve perceptions of him and exceed expectations of how he would perform. Critically, he did much better at neutralizing his biggest weakness, appearing chaotic and out of control, while Biden’s performance exacerbated concerns about his age and fitness to serve as President,” pollster Carly Cooperman stated.
The poll had a balanced sample, with 36% of respondents identifying as Democrats and Republicans, respectively, and a quarter identifying as independent. This survey followed a similar study by CNN that also showed Trump dominating the debate.
Despite increasing calls for Biden to withdraw from the race, he has vowed to stay.
Meanwhile, Trump took to Truth Social on Saturday, declaring his debate performance as “the greatest debate performance in the long and storied history of Presidential Debates.”
