A radio host was shot dead while appearing on a Facebook Live stream in the Philippines.
According to the Misamis Occidental Police, Juan Jumalon was fatally shot inside his home-based southern Philippine radio station on Sunday morning.
The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. local time in Calamba town while Jumalon was on air for 94.7 Calamba Gold FM and Facebook Live.
The shooter was able to gain entry into the home by pretending to be a listener. He then quickly pulled out a gun and shot Jumalon twice.
Police reported that Jumalon, known as DJ Johnny Walker, was shot point blank in the face.
The gunman also stole a gold necklace from Jumalon, 57, before fleeing the scene of the crime.
A gruesome video of the attack shows Jumalon sinking back in his chair after two gunshots are fired while music plays. The gunman’s face remained unseen in the footage.
According to police, the gunman fled with a companion who was waiting as a look out outside on a motorcycle.
Jumalon was pronounced dead while being transported to the hospital following the incident.
An officer reported, “We are currently still investigating the crime and trying to find a motive. We think it might have been a work-related incident.”
“We have released a sketch of one of the suspects involved in the shooting on Facebook and we kindly ask the public’s help in the investigation,” the officer added.
According to the authorities, the man is over the age of 40, of medium build and was last seen wearing a red cap with a green shirt and black short pants.
The fatal shooting of Jumalon was also condemned by President Bongbong Marcos.
“I condemn in the strongest terms the murder of broadcaster Juan Jumalon,” Marcos shared in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter). “I have instructed the PNP to conduct a thorough investigation to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice.”
“Attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in our democracy, and those who threaten the freedom of the press will face the full consequences of their actions,” he concluded.
