A high school teacher known in his community was arrested for shooting his wife and brother-in-law at a wedding in Tennessee.
Cody Wiggins, 29, has been charged with two counts of attempted homicide, one count of aggravated assault, one count of domestic assault, and one count of tampering with evidence.
Wiggins, who is originally from Florida, was at a Marriott hotel in Cool Springs around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Franklin police responded to an active shooter call at the wedding venue and when they arrived, they began giving aid to the two victims.
The shooter, who police said used a semi-automatic handgun, had fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended in a nearby subdivision.
The authorities released a statement, “So far we have the perpetrator in custody and have found that he is the husband and brother-in-law to the two victims. Apparently they were attending a wedding at the time of the incident. We are still gathering evidence and questioning Wiggins to find out his motives behind the attack.”
The two victims were transported by ambulance to Vanderbilt Hospital. No update about their condition had been released as of Wednesday.
meanwhile, Wiggins is currently being held in the Williamson County Jail on $3.5 million bond.
Prior to his arrest, Wiggins worked as an English teacher at West Florida High School in Pensacola.
In a statement to the Pensacola News Journal, Escambia Schools Superintendent Keith Leonard said, “In compliance with Florida law and the Escambia County School District’s contractual provisions, the employee will be immediately suspended.”
“We will continue to work with law enforcement as the case is brought to a culmination,” Leonard added.
