A 15-year old student died in Texas after being struck by a semi-truck while getting off a school bus.
The teenager had just exited the Livingston ISD bus on U.S. Route 59 on Thursday when the deadly collision occurred.
Authorities said, “The bus was at a complete stop when the truck rear-ended a Toyota traveling behind the bus, causing the truck to veer into the driveway, striking the teen that was exiting off the school bus.”
The teen, whose name is not being released at this time due to age, passed away at the scene of the accident.
The bus’ flashing red sign was out when the crash occurred and neither the truck nor the driver of the Toyota were injured in the crash.
Gregory Jackson, 41, who was the driver of the semi-truck, was arrested and has been charged with criminal negligent homicide.
According to the Polk County jail records, Jackson’s bond has been set at $250,000.
In a statement, Livingston ISD confirmed that the victim was a student who attended school in the district.
“It is sad when our district loses a member of its family,” the district said. “It is even more tragic when such a young life is taken away from us.”
The district also extended its condolences to the victim’s family and friends. Counseling is available to those in need, they added.
“At times like this, we are reminded how precious life can be and how fragile each life truly is,” the district said.
