Rep. Nydia Velázquez, took to Twitter on Oct. 11th to chastise Christopher Columbus as a “genocidal maniac” on his holiday.
Progressives continue pushing for the federal holiday to be officially replaced with Indigenous Peoples Day.
Velázquez tweeted, “Today should just be #IndigenousPeopleDay. And yet this day is still shared with a genocidal maniac.”
She also stated, “We need to take this time to reflect on the brutal history of violence against Indigenous peoples in America and recognize that there is still a lot of work to repair this harm.”
Many other fellow Democrats followed her lead and sympathized with her plight. They also took to twitter and other social media platforms to voice their opinion.
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries similarly tweeted: “Millions of indigenous people lost their lives during the genocide committed against them in the Americas. Today we pause in solemn recognition of this human tragedy. And recommit to uplift the original occupants of this land.”
“On #IndigenousPeoplesDay,” Sen. Tammy Duckworth tweeted, “I hope folks use this time to reflect and learn from our history. Indigenous people were here
long before America’s ‘discovery,’ and they are essential to our future.”
Several states have already jumped on this bandwagon; banning Christopher Columbus Day on October 11th and renaming it Indigenous Peoples Day. President Biden issued the first-ever presidential proclamation of Indigenous Peoples Day on Friday; and he issued a separate proclamation for Columbus Day on Monday. President Biden made it a point to reference the “devastation and violence” that western exploration brought to the Americas.
Many Republicans also took to social media platforms to make a stance as well. They wanted to affirm their support of Christopher Columbus Day.
Many said although they didn’t condone all the killing of innocent people during those times, it was still the arrival and discovery of our great civilization founded by Christopher Columbus.
Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, simply tweeted, “Columbus Day.”
“Today, we celebrate Christopher Columbus arriving in the Americas and the dawn of Western Civilization in the New World. #ColumbusDay,” wrote Sen. Doug Mastriano, R-Pa.
“It’s called Columbus Day. Pass it on,” the House Republicans’ official Twitter account wrote.
With such a torn view on what to call this American holiday, some states are working forward to changing the name, and others are standing firm.
All democrats are crazy leftists! They want to destroy this nation! Now divided. The only cure is to vote the democrats out of existence, send them all to Venezuela!
This constant denigrating of American icons has to stop! I for one am fed up! Do the democrats think American citizens are stupid?
What will the democrats do when COVID strikes from the illegal immigrants? F’ed that one up to!
One more thing, so far everything Biden has done has been a disaster’
