U.S. Marine Carl Spurlin Dekel, who celebrated his 100th birthday last week, is so ashamed by the world news today.
Dekel says, “What American soldiers fought for in World War II, has gone down the drain.”
Dekel says serving his country in WWII was the most important thing he ever did. The veteran and Silver Star holder says he wouldn’t hesitate to put his life on the line again, but regrets that the U.S. has slipped away from what he remembers.
“People don’t realize what they have,” Dekel said. “The things we did and the things we fought for and the boys that died for it, it’s all gone down the drain.”
Dekel’s sentiments came the same day the U.S. lost the last surviving Medal of Honor recipient from WWII.
Hershel “Woody” Williams died Wednesday at 98 years old, surrounded by his family at a hospital named after him in his home state of West Virginia.
Williams, also a U.S. Marine, received his medal for heroism from former President Harry Truman during the battle of Iwo Jima in 1945.
America’s 63 living Medal of Honor recipients honored Williams in a statement.
“Friends and family of Woody Williams knew him as a West Virginia farmer’s son and the youngest of 11 children who dutifully supported his family after his father died,” they wrote in a statement through the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. “Fellow Marines knew him as the corporal who volunteered for a mission on Iwo Jima to clear a lane through enemy pillboxes that were destroying American tanks.”
“Veterans in West Virginia knew him as their advocate through his work as a Veterans Service Representative. Gold Star families knew Woody through his work raising money for scholarships and other programs through the Woody Williams Foundation,” they continued. “We, his fellow Medal of Honor Recipients, knew him as our friend and one of our heroes. We will miss him greatly.”
Williams had the same opinions as Dekel when he was interviewed on Memorial Day. However, Williams was bit more hopeful and said he wishes to see a resurgence of patriotism in the United States.
Williams said, “I’ve been at this probably 25 to 30 times, but I believe today we had more honor wreaths than we’ve ever had before, and that’s encouraging,” Williams told WSAZ during a veterans’ event. “It gives me encouragement that we’re coming back and that we will again be that United States of America that had so much patriotism and love of country.”
Bless him. I know many of our men and women in the Armed Forces share his grief. These men and women put their lives on the line and sacrificed so much for this country. The present administration may as well walk up and personally spit in their faces. I applaud this man and give him and all like him my respect and support. The true United States of America no longer exists.
As a veteran of Vietnam conflict I can say the america of today is unlike the America I grew up inand a lot of that has to do with social media where everyone is disrespectful with no consequences. Young people today have been given everything and although some are terrific young men and women so many are easily led by the fringe groups that only wish to change America for the worse. We fought for this great nation and now we sadly watch as it is destroyed from within. God bless America because America needs his blessings.
I’ve been saying this for years now.
The America we older generation knew is OVER.
The younger generation doesn’t even want to know what America was like years ago.
If you start talking about it, they willingly distract themselves with their cellphones, or you can watch it go through one ear and out the other ear.
If you don’t believe me, then try it sometime and experience it in person.
It’s not like it used to be when our generation sat down and listened to our aunt’s, uncle’s and grandparents tell their life experiences of their generation. Our generation used to love hearing those stories.
NO MORE.
Now society is erasing the horrid, hurtful, bad, American past.
They are rewriting history and excluding things unappropriate for the new now generation.
The EVIL Baby Boomer generation is on the hurry up and be gone list.
Now todays events are the NEW and only NORM for this generation.
We may be living under a communist flag in the NEAR future.
I’ve always heard, ” they’ll take us without firing a shot” . No wonder, our country is being destroyed from within, the new America is a dog eat dog world.
I’ve always heard, ” with friends like that, who needs enemies? “.
Ok, but GOD is watching everything that’s going on today and he’s about to look at Jesus and tell him to get his bride.
EVIL will not prevail.
God is still “Alpha and Omega” .
